First impressions (Episodes 1-20)

Since this is a long weekend drama, thought I’d break this down in parts. First off, this story is about a small but distinguished tailor shop that has been passed down from generation to generation and the current family that runs it. The grandpa (and Master Tailor) is Master Lee, a really nice man who is sad that no one (esp his only son) wants to take over his shop, and with his soon-to-be deteriorating health, he decided to close his business for a while to finish his bucket list (before it’s too late). The matriarch is played by the beautiful Kim Young Ae (Rest in peace – as she succumbed to cancer last week), whose character spends a lot of time whining and depressed because his husband just went away and has not returned, angry because of her daughter’s foolishness, sweet to her son and takes her of everyone around her.

f

Master Lee and grandma has two children: Dong Jin and Dong Sook. For the first few episodes, Dong Jin seemed like the complete opposite of his father – he was very career focused, married into a very wealthy family and equally cold wife. He came off as very cool, doesn’t let anyone get too close to him. As the next few episodes unveiled, we would understand why he became like that, and it was mostly because he lived with his wife’s family, who treated him like her butler and/or manager who will take care of her family business (Meesa Apparel) while she is busy shopping and being a socialite and who was not close to his family. When he lost his place in his father-in-law’s company as CEO by his scheming brother and mother-in-law and finding out about his father’s condition; he resigned from Meesa Apparel and decided to take over his father’s company until his father comes back.

Dong sook, on the other hand, has been divorced several times, a good daughter to her mother, has an adult daughter, and owns a small comic book rental shop. I didn’t really think much of her other than she was pretty and seemed like the type who was a hopeless romantic and sometimes a fool when it comes to love. More on her later as I introduce the other gentlemen.

We have a lot of extended family characters who are integral to the story. First is Master Lee’s apprentice, Sam Do, who is very handsome (too handsome maybe) for his thuggish wife Sun nyeo (played by the funny Ra Mi Ran). I say thuggish because as the background story showed, she didn’t finish school and spent more time causing trouble and has a quick temper, especially when she sees other women flirting with her husband. I like this couple – it’s obvious that despite the issues they have, they love each other very much and is quite a team when they don’t fight with each other (mostly when Sun Nyeo behaves) – but sometimes I feel like Sun Nyeo is very selfish and annoying and wonder what Sam Do saw in her. They mostly fight because of Sun nyeo’s insecurities. Sam Do really wants to be a tailor but Sunnyeo wants a normal life selling fried chicken at the market. Eventually, when he started rebelling against her, she was forced to give in and agree to move to Seoul to help out in the tailor shop. Sam Do sacrificed his dream for her, and when it was his time to try to achieve his dream again, Sun nyeo was very angry – I didn’t like this part of her because I thought Sam Do was already begging her just for a short time, while waiting for Master Lee to come back and she couldn’t even support her husband. Another big no-no for me was for Sun Nyeo repeatedly forcing her husband to have sex and get pregnant. I understand her desire for a child, but Sam Do already agreed once, she got everyone’s hopes up and told everyone she was pregnant the day after they had sex (of course it doesn’t show overnight lol!) and had a phantom pregnancy. Then when she found out she wasn’t pregnant, obviously Sam Do is very furious. He agreed to have another go at trying for a baby, you made him hope then disappointed him. Not only that, he hasn’t even getting over the disappointment and she is nagging at him to try and try and try. No wonder Sam Do shouted at her and got drunk. I think Sun Nyeo was wrong – she kept saying that she should be the one who is angrier but she didn’t even apologize to him for the ruckus she caused! and Sam Do told her, let’s not talk about it, but she just kept pushing and pushing him. I seriously wanted to go into the tv and slap her silly. I’m also sad she has no other friend that she can talk to or advice her on these things – heck she is confiding to a guy who is a loser – more on him later.  I have a feeling they will eventually have a child and be happy. But for now, I hope the next succeeding episodes will focus more on her and her amazing cooking skills (maybe open a shop and be successful).

samdo.JPG

Next character I will introduce is a very important character as she is the leading lady in the show. Her name is Yun Shil and she is an employee of the tailor shop. The story did not mention if she came from the province or city but the episodes show her as very sweet and cheerful young lady, who always has a smile on her face and helps the people in their neighborhood. She is also not well off, as her father was sick and because of that, a local gangster (Ki pyo) took notice of her. The first episode was actually of everyone preparing for her wedding to Ki Pyo – and everyone trying to warn her or change her mind. Why would a nice girl marry a gangster out of gratitude or debt? She didn’t have to go that far to express her gratitude of helping her father (who still died anyway). And while I agree with them (she can pay him off instead of getting married to him), I could understand her simple thinking. Eventually, they did not get to complete the wedding ceremony because halfway through it, the police interrupted the wedding and arrested Gi pyo. For the next couple of episodes, she faces a dilemma of whether to continue the marriage (wait for Gi pyo to get out of jail after 6 months) and act like a dutiful daughter in law to an awful awful Gi pyo’s mother (who I so badly want to go down for treated Yun Shil so badly) or take this opportunity to get out of the whole marriage and gain her freedom (and possibly face the growing attraction between her and Dong Jin).

e.JPG

Speaking of Dong Jin, he and Yun Shil met at the worst circumstance, when she was running after Gi pyo and bumping into Dong Jin. During this time, they have never met each other and did not know both were connected to the tailor shop. The next couple of episodes have them fighting at each turn, getting into coincidental (and very cringe worthy – at least for Yun shil) situations and misunderstandings; all the while, slowly getting to know each other and realizing that their first impressions were the exact opposite of their real selves. Dong Jin thought she was a stupid and manipulative liar when she was actually honest and caring. Yun Shil thought he was such an arrogant jerk but was actually as warm hearted as Master Lee. I’m already in Episode 20 and the attraction between the two is starting to show – mostly coming from Dong Jin – like buying her a pair of shoes, always driving her around and walking her back home. There was this funny scene when Yun Shil asked him straight, “Do you like me?”and Dong Jin was so startled, he dropped his tea and vehemently denied it. At this time, Yun Shil is still “almost” married to Gi pyo, who I think will be a force to reckon with when he gets out of prison, while Dong Jin has recently divorced his wife, Hyo Joo. I think it’s just a matter of time before they get together and I hope they will be sweeter and will work hard to bring success to the tailor shop. And some kiss scenes please since they recently confirmed the actors are dating in real life.

a.JPG

Next up is Dong Jin’s ex-in laws. Hyo Joo is the ex-wife, there’s not much scene with her except for the sulking and the bitchy remarks to her stepmom and stepsiblings. She was such a bitch to Dong Jin and demanded a divorce, but I felt a little twinge of hurt for her when Dong Jin immediately signed them and left. In a way, I think she was scared – she lost her father, her wealth and now her husband, who she thought betrayed her. I think their marriage was more of a business marriage than for love, but I guess eventually she fell in love too, except there was just too much distance and less communication that their marriage crumbled. I’m glad to see her trying to at least gain some ground in her family’s business – I hope they she eventually finds happiness in managing her family’s business and maybe find her own love. Her stepmom is Eun Sook, who used to work for Master Lee’s shop, supposedly seduced Hyo Joo’s wealthy father (who was very much married at that time) and succeeded to marry him once the wife died. We could understand why Hyo Joo would hate her. Eun Sook, on the other hand, is partly scheming, mostly she is just fighting for her children’s rights, and partly motherly , as despite how Hyo Joo treats her, she still tries to make sure she doesn’t make bad decisions and just wants them to all get along as a family. The stepchildren are Hyosang and Hyowon. I honestly think the actor playing Hyosang looks too young to look like a CEO of a huge company (his eyeglasses look too fake on him) and to fight against Dong Jin, but he did win and got hold of Meesa Apparel. I think he’s not that bad, he really just wants to take the company from Dong Jin, I guess he feels that he should inherit the business since he’s the real son, and Dong Jin is just the in-law.

hyosang.JPG

Cue in Hyowon, who I dont really like as a character because she is ditzy and annoying. They are trying to portray her as sweet (like trying to befriend Hyojoo) and caring for Tae yang even if they didn’t know each other but she is batshit crazy!! Yells at Tae yang (more on him next section) for no reason other than she feels jealous (and she feels entitled to just because she took care of him and paid for his bills) and totally screaming at him for the girls she misunderstood as his girlfriends. Add to the fact that no one wants to be her friend in the office and even her in laws (Dong Sook’s daughter) doesn’t like her and she is trying to force her to be friends with her.

hyowon

Tae yang, is Yun Shil’s friend, who used to go out with Ji Yun – she used to be poor but became a popular TV announcer and become so mean to Tae yang and broke up with him to be with Hyosang. At this point, i dont know if Ji Yun really likes Hyosang or she is just using him for the money. On the other hand, Hyosang is a playboy who knows the history between Tae yang and Ji Yun and uses it to play her by hiring Tae Yang to work in Meesa Apparel. The truth was eventually revealed that Hyosang knew all along about their past, Ji Yun getting angry at Hyosang for going on a blind date and still trying to ruin Tae yang’s life. I hate Ji yun – i hope Hyosang drops her – at this point, I dont know if Hyosang really likes her or just playing with her – how could you like a girl that manipulative – though Hyosang has not seen the real Ji Yun – who is super mean to everyone and fakes the niceness. Or maybe they deserve each other because they are both manipulative? another twist to this whole confusing connection is that Tae yang works in Hyowon’s team, who is starting to fall for Taeyang and hates Ji yun – they have several bad encounters where Ji yun is too arrogant and refuses to apologize to Hyowon. I would love to see Ji Yun’s face when she finally realizes Hyowon is Hyosang’s sister – and that she should have been making friends with her instead of fighting her (Clearly she didn’t do her homework or she would have known who she was). As for Taeyang, I love his puppy dog look, he is hardworking and smart – I dont really want him and Hyowon to get together at this point because he is too good for Hyowon, but I think Tae yang will be the good influence to Hyowon to teach her about life while Hyowon can teach him about loving for a second time (this time where his love is appreciated and returned).

b.JPG

One last major character, whose story is the least that I care about and I mostly fast forward, is Sung Joon. he is a hasbeen rockstar (won rookie award way back when) and has one stupid hit song (Susana’s handkerchief) that he keeps singing practically every episode that makes me want to ban this song forever!! (LOL) I dont’like him because he doesn’t seem to have grown up at all. he still believes in his fantasy that he will be successful again one day but I dont see him do anything about it. He doesn’t write any songs, he doesn’t do auditions, he doesn’t study the current trends in music. he is busking in the streets but uses his old songs (who would listen to him if he keeps singing old tunes). He is partly using Dong Sook to get money from her and lost it through fraud (argh!! how stupid and desperate he must have been)! The last few episodes has him actually doing some work (even though it’s for a community, it’s a small step to gain back this purpose/meaning in life). I dont know if there’s a plan to make him work in the tailor shop too but for now, I just hope he starts cutting his hair, fixing his fashion sense and working towards his music dream (if he really wants to). As of Dong Sook, hay.. she is too old to be so lovesick for a guy. I could understand wanting to help him, but to steal your mother and your daughter’s money for a guy who doesn’t even want you is LOW. if I were him and she really believed in his dream and talent, I would have lent him money and become his manager. at least she knows where her money is going and can openly support him. She even sold her comic book store.. jeez! i thought she could have used her comic book store rental to promote him and his music. plays his songs, let him stay there, talk to people, hold like weekly live music sessions, etc.

d

Whew! That’s a whole lot of characters and side storylines to follow – for now, I like the pacing of the story, it’s not too fast but not too dragging (except for DongSook/Sung Joon) romance. I also like that the story is not doing the usual makjang and is more a feel good family story. The soundtrack has not been a hit though – there are no songs that really stick out. I love the comments on the tailoring as I feel like I’m learning something about the business. I love the actors playing the characters, I love the overall mood or feel of the drama. Hoping the next couple of episodes will get even better!

Review (Spoilers ahead!!)

I didn’t like Jaehyun. The movie tried to portray him as a “cool” playboy who is sought after by a lot of girls, but I thought he was an a..hole! I expected more smooth moves from him or at least have some cool pick-up lines for Soojung but he brazenly asked her relentlessly to sleep with him, I’m surprised Soojung didn’t just slap him and cried sexual harrassment while on the train. No, not only did she futilely brushed off his advances, she gamely followed him all over Busan just to meet Kang Jin Chul! Wow, am not sure she was really that desperate to get Jin Chul for her contract or she really was attracted to him that she was just acting as if she didn’t like him.

372ec996af9745adb8e4410940b5a0df.jpg

then the storyline shifted from showing Jaehyun as a douchebag to suddenly becoming this super nice gentleman, great basketball player, sweet to kids, nice hyung and suddenly she started to fall for him. They don’t really have a lot in common except they were attracted and spent one day together.

67b3d380669429c7adc989d489d3974315275611_558522331013144_2864148350641373184_n

(Well, there was one scene where Jaehyun was crying and Senior Kang said, “Because you are such a show off” was probably the movie’s way of showing that he really is a nice guy with a sensitive heart, just like another scene where Jaehyun told Soojung, “I said all that because you were too pretty”.)

3456

Senior Kang was supposed to be like the character who would provide all the laughs but he wasn’t funny at all. I thought he was rather pathetic and Jaehyun was a jerk to just forget about him (they did go to Busan together and he just ditched him and Senior Kang was just fine with it). They should have just given Kim Seulgi a larger role and more scenes since she was way funnier. The last scene where Kang tried to same thing to AM Hong in the train and she was slapped was hilarious even if the scene was short!

slap

Also, they never showed in the movie if Jaehyun even knew or if Soojung was deliberately hiding from him that she was following him all over because of Kang Jin Chul, and i was expecting him to get angry that he was being used – this never happened and i’m glad it didn’t because that would have been a waste of storyline. I guess he realized she needed Kang Jin Chul when she left her presentation and he was nice enough to bring it to her and save her presentation (okay, okay, my heart is melting too – he is a nice guy).

Mood_of_the_Day-002

The scene at the restaurant was a bit sad – Jaehyun was so excited to see Soojung and happily listened to her conversation with friends then he was hurt by Soojung saying he didn’t mean anything and he was just a one night stand – I was expecting this scene because there was this line from Soojung earlier, “Someday someone is going to make you feel hurt (or something like that)” but when this happened, I also felt bad for him. It was his first time to really really like a girl and that must have been a blow for him. but hey, it was his fault for being an ass to her and he was proudly telling her it was just for fun.

Capture12

I forgot about the note he wrote until the reception lady mentioned it to Soojung – and she ran after him (i don’t know how long this was after their fight scene) but they obviously couldn’t forget each other. In the end, i’m happy she was brave enough to go after him and he was finally man enough to love her too.

7.JPG

8.JPG

I like Soojung, even though she seems meek, but at least she knows what she wants and is also good at her job. What i dont like (which is typical of Korean movies) is for the ladies always having to go through the most embarrassing situations and make them look clumsy and then it shows the guy finds it endearing (really?!?)

The little twist in the end about what happened to Soojung getting hit by a ball was expected – i noticed Korean movies love this kinds of “destiny” storylines.

Overall, except for the first part when Jaehyun was being so full of himself, this was a nice romantic movie to watch.

Review

I was thinking that it was going to be your typical fat girl loses weight, becomes pretty girl, handsome trainer falls in love. well, it is.. but there was so much more than that. the reason why she wanted to lose weight was more than getting dumped by her longtime boyfriend but also finding out she is sick and needs to start living a healthier lifestyle. enter handsome and sexy trainer, who seems to be so cool and confident, but then we find out he has not lived a very nice life and was sick, that’s why he became a fierce trainer. i was really that interested with the longtime boyfriend and the fat friend turned mean bitch, or the internal power struggle within Youngho’s family. I was more interested in the relationship between Joo Eun and YoungHo. I thought they were a perfect example of #RelationshipGoals. Here are the reasons why:

Both the guy and the girl showed equal interest in each other. They were very candid with how they feel and are not afraid to show it. See how smitten YoungHo is and how cheeky Joo Eun can be.

That first time when YoungHo saw she lost weight and her dimple is starting to show

4dimple.jpg

They like teasing and annoying each other and both can take the insults and comments without being too pissed. It means they have great chemistry and there’s healthy interaction between the two. I love all the instances they were “fighting” – esp that “I can’t believe you were once Daegu’s Venus” look from YoungHo. There was even one scene in the dining table and the three guys saw her old pretty pics and they had incredulous looks on their faces that it was Joo eun.

They go on dates, hold hands, get cheesy with the pictures and they communicate even when they’re apart.

When they miss each other and see each other again. I love the thing he always does when he opens his arms very wide and tell her to come over and give him a hug (awww).

8runtome

8imhome.jpg

Their relationship has a healthy dose of sweetness and sexiness. And lots of romance. YoungHo was not an expert in dating and it was nice to see that while the girl was showing him her moves, apparently she doesn’t even need to since he seems to be a natural (*swoons*). He has some slick moves in the early episode where he opened the umbrella and kissed her. and that cute dimple flying kiss they do.

Here’s the proposal. Very genius of him to always give her a scarf, but this time, the ring was hidden in the scarf all along!

16proposal

They support each other in sickness and in health. Youngho was always checking up on her sickness and making sure she get plenty of exercise and eats right. While she supports him when he had his attacks.

One of the most heartbreaking scenes was when Youngho wouldn’t let Joo Eun in to see him in the hospital. omg that was a painful scene to watch. I was crying with Joo Eun and i wanted to yell at Youngho to please let her in but I understand why he didn’t want her to see him that way.

13sick13sick2

They get fit together by doing various activities like exercising. (this can also be classified under Dates and support each other and the easy bantering).

8fit9fit29fun9fun2

They are not afraid to admit their feelings to their friends and family.

9confession9confession2

I love Young Ho’s two friends, Joon Sung and Ji Woong and how they are protective of their hyung. Joon Sung has a side storyline with the CF girl (which i didn’t really like because the girl was so annoying and he never expressed any interest in her all throughout the story. I was more interested with him and his mother. Ji Woong was like a cute energizer bunny, but the too many “Maám” was very very very annoying!!!

12friends14bday

I loved Joo Eun’s best friend – she is just the best friend that you want – someone who will scold you but also support you. Love this scene when Joo Eun was showing her the ring. (and i like how they nicknamed YoungHo as “sexy guy” – i also do that with my best friend, give codenames)

16bffring

It was cute to see YoungHo awkwardly holding a bouquet of flowers and very nervous in meeting Joo Eun’s mom. On the other hand, Joo Eun was so pretty in her pink hanbok dancing and singing for YoungHo’s grandma – she may not be rich but she is smart, sincere, pretty, cheerful — everything an in-law could ask for!

15family16familypic.JPG

They happily support each other’s careers. One of my favorite scenes was when Joo Eun was leaving for home and YoungHo was staying at her place and she was saying, “I will now work and bring home lots of money since he’s not working” while he does not mind staying home, waiting  for her all day and even helping out to babysit her best friend’s son.

11car11come.JPG11sweet

Not just the everyday teasing and bantering, they also get serious and think of their future. They talk about getting married, gaining approval from family and having kids.

16weddinggift16futurekids

Finally, the last scene in the last episode perfectly sums up their happy wonderful life!

Review I actually watched this last year (i know still delayed since this came out in 2013) back when I was marathon watching So  Ji Sub dramas (i watched Oh My Venus right after this). First off, i want to talk about the characters. Joo Joong Won actually reminded me a little bit of Cha Seung Won’s character in The Greatest Love, mostly because both of them seem to be mature but not very experienced in love. Second, they are both crazy (though Dokgo Jin is crazier!) I love SJS’s famous line and his look on his face everytime he says it. I love his suits too!! i dont think any normal guy would wear these too fashionable suits but on him it looks so good and fits his character’s personality. As for TaeYang, at first I thought she was really weird because she always looks so unkempt beside the pristine JoongWon; and she was half clingy half annoying whenever she tries to hold on to JoongWon coz she’s afraid of ghosts. But then when we find out what happened to her, i felt bad for her because she couldn’t find a stable job, she was scared to death of sleeping coz she knows she will see ghosts (and drama did show a lot of creepy spirits!). I love the premise that staying close will rid Taeyang of ghosts, and that’s how the love story started. I dont think they have a lot in common, but maybe it’s because they understood and rely on each other that brought them closer. JoongWon looks so cold but he was the one who helped Taeyang when she got too scared, got her a job, helped her talk to the spirits. I seriously cried as hard as TaeYang when I thought JoongWon died (of course he wont!). I love the cases they “solve” every episode, except for that time when the scary looking ajumma was on ( i think she was the same scary ajumma in that Lee Joongki drama previously).

here’s the kiss scene from episode 9 where TaeYang was possessed (credits to the uploader)

For the secondary characters, I like Seo In Guk’s character, though he looks too young beside GHJ and SJS. It is funny how he is super scared of ghosts (big contrast to JoongWon) yet was willing to overcome it because he likes Taeyang a lot. Yi Ryung is so pretty but very mean to Taeyang, the only time I could tolerate her was when she tries to vie for Seo In Guk’s affections who doesn’t even care if she’s a popular celebrity. lol. i still think that the pairing was forced, because she was basically pushing him to like her and he just found her annoying for most of the series.

Overall, this drama was a mix of comedy, drama, mystery, horror and romance that is sure to tickle every kdrama fan’s fantasies.

someone made a mix of the best scenes – and the music playing is from one of the ost songs by Yoon Mirae called “Touch Love (really nice love song!) (credits to the uploader)

here’s another song from the soundtrack, this time from Hyorin called Driving me crazy (credits to the uploader)

will try to take screencaps of SJS’s suits when I have the time next week.

loving the show! very fast paced! hyuga is like a weird genius with awful bedside manners while sawaki is naive and sweet. i love that they affect each other positively.. sawaki making hyuga more “humane” and sensitive and hyuga making sawaki more confident about herself. i’m intrigued as to why sawaki pretended to be sawaki (hyuga’s mom’s name), but im guessing she knows him and the mom from before.. maybe a childhood friend? asahina seems like a nice guy, complete opposite to hyuga’s weirdness but somehow i find him fake — there are some moments where he has this look on his face like he is jealous or plotting something. let’s see. as for his sister yoko, im not sure what’s the point of her — she seems to know hyuga too and is following him around. im guessing the project about the personal files is more so that hyuga can find his mother. i wonder if he will ever meet his mom. i find it funny that sawaki is in and out of the company (good thing the employees are not wondering too!) and for some reason hyuga and sawaki has an immediate connection – is it because they seem to complement each other?

episodes 3-4

these episodes explained a lot — from sawaki sharing how she met hyuga and his mom, to asahina reminiscing how he first met hyuga and eventually set up next innovation, to yoko telling hyuga how they first met and “fell in love”? (that is what im getting from her story). i feel bad for yoko — a guy she loved before can’t even remember their time together! i dont know about his condition (i need to google!) but i thought he is bad with faces and names but i guess he also doesn’t remember the memories and conversations from his past too — like amnesia?! then how come he remembers asahina? is it because he sees him everyday?

and i was wondering how sawaki will get into next innovation again and i like how they did it. i really love their interaction together!!! and sawaki is too adorable once she dropped her job hunting clothes (though i feel like she looks younger beside hyuga). i still can’t get over finding out her real name – natsui makoto — im already used to calling her sawaki chihiro 🙂

i still dont know what to make of yoko.. looks like she is the love triangle but i just feel like she’s is holding on to a past with hyuga that he doesn’t even remember and seems like he is not even interested in her now. so aside from the love triangle thing, i dont know what else her part in the series is supposed to be. will her relentless talk about the past help him in some way?

as for the brother — looks like the real side of him is slowly showing up.. im guessing he will do something that will hurt hyuga and he will take next innovation away from him. which is sad since he seems to be hyuga’s only friend – i will feel bad if he turns out to be lying and pretending to be his friend all this time!!

can’t wait to watch the next couple of episodes!
